Who can use this font?

It is suitable for special needs teachers and linguists, for dictionary compilers and EFL publishers, for publishers of travellers phrase books and for the many publishers of books with non-dictionary words (such as gardening reference books, or books with names of places or people).

What are the special features?

The digraph sounds of English are shown by two joined letters, such as the examples below. There is one joined digraph for each digraph sound.
rain feet ship

(The full set of symbols is shown at the foot of this page).

There is a separate letter for the schwa or neutral vowel. It allows this sound to be recognized without it appearing to jar too much. For example:

present

Stress is shown by using semi-bold for the stressed syllable. (Advice: The semi-bold is best used for the letters just before and including the vowel, in a syllable).

Key differences between British and American English can still be shown with the one representation. Separate symbols are used for:
fast audio

These two fonts were used for the pronunciation guide of the Jolly Dictionary (in both editions). This 6,000 word dictionary is useful as a reference guide, showing the pronunciation guide in use. (British English ISBN 1 84414 000 8, American English 1 84414 001 6).

It is a requirement that any publication with an ISBN or ISSN should include the following statement:
"The pronunciation guide in this publication uses the Sassoon Jolly Digraphs fonts. For more information contact info@jollylearning.co.uk"

Where can I get help?

The modified 'digraph' letters in these fonts were developed by Christopher Jolly of Jolly Learning Ltd. He sees the font as having a much wider application and value than just in the publishing that his company does. He is able to provide (limited) extra help on projects. Contact:
