How do I change the gobbledegook text into the properly joined font?

A problem occurs on Windows machines if the program was run before the fonts were properly recognized by the Operating System. Only if the correct Sassoon font is present in Level 1 will the "Join" action result in correctly joined text in other Levels. Similiarly, if fonts are not installed correctly, joining will not happen correctly on Macintosh machines.

Some or all of the default font fields have lost their formatting. This can be caused by two things. Either the fonts are not installed or, although the fonts are installed, they are not being recognized by the joining program's text input fields.

The following solutions have been designed to resolve the issue. The easiest and most likely solution first. Because there can be many reasons for fields not formatting correctly with fonts, the remaining solutions have been devised to both eliminate unknown actions by the User and put the program back to its default state.

Solution 1:
When the Joiner program has been launched, visit 'Level 1'. Enter the word 'fox'. Select "Size". Change the point size of the font to any other size. The 'f' should now appear with a long tail (like a fox). Change the size again until all point sizes display 'fox' with a long tail in Level 1. All levels of font should now join correctly. Changing the size forces a reformatting of the text field with the correct Sassoon font.

Solution 2:
During the installation process, the installer offers to "Launch now". This option should not be used. It has become apparent that the Windows Operating Systems do not recognise the installed fonts unless the 'Fonts' directory is visited manually.

So the quickest solution to this problem is to visit the Fonts directory before launchng the program.
If the program is running, Exit/Quit the Joiner program. Then...

Click Start >
Control Panel >
Fonts > or (Appearance & Themes > Fonts on some Systems)
Confirm the fonts are installed by locating them in the list.
Close the Fonts window.
The Joiner program can now be launched from the Desktop Shortcut or Start > All Programs > Sassoon...
Fonts should now appear correctly in the Joiner program.

Solution 3 (if solution 2 was not effective):
The fields used for input of text matter were not formatted in Sassoon fonts when the "Join" button was selected. Reformat the input text field using the correct font (in 18pt, 24, 36, 48pt, 72pt sizes).

Here are the actions that can be taken...
(References to Sassoon Joiner also apply to Sassoon Cambridge Joiner unless otherwise stated).

a) Start by checking to see if fonts are installed:
For Windows users:
Click START > Control Panels > Appearance and Themes/Fonts

Mac users open the Hard Disk/~/Library/Fonts folder.
See if the Sassoon Joiner fonts appear in the list of fonts...
(Names may be truncated in the list you see).

For Sassoon Joiner these are:
SassoonOneGB
SassoonTwoGB
SassoonThreeGB
SassoonFourGB

For Sassoon Cambridge Joiner these are:
SassoonCUPJoinedGB
SassoonCUPLinkedGB
SassoonCUPPenGB
SassoonCUPPrimaryGB

IF THE FONTS ARE NOT INSTALLED, PLEASE INSTALL THEM NOW...
Installing Windows fonts
Installing Mac OS fonts
RESTART MAY BE BEST NOW.

Launch the Joiner program. If the 'f' does not have the long descender of Sassoon, it is still in Arial or Times. Please use another program such as Word (or your favourite text processing program) and enter the word "fox". Then format the text using Joiner fonts. Does the text now change to the Sassoon Joiner font with a long " f " character?

If the fonts are installed OK and text program can format text using the Joiner fonts, it indicates the fonts are working in Word (or other text program) but the Joiner program cannot recognize them.

b) Force reformatting by changing size:
Leave Word (or your favourite program) running. Start > Programs > Sassoon Joiner and select the program to run it. Go the Level 2 by clicking inside the "Linked letters" box. Enter this text... fox
(which may appear in either Arial or Times font, but with a short " f ")...

Select "Size" to change the font to a different size, say 72pt. If the f is now in the correct font ("SassoonCUPPrimaryGB" for Sassoon Cambridge Joiner) the or "SassoonOneGB" for Sassoon Joiner) f will be longer than x. Note: the letters do not appear joined at this stage.

(The long 'f' descender to f is crucial. The program must start with the correct font here to make a good joined result). If the f is OK, go ahead and press "Join". Your text should now appear joined and you may Copy and Paste joined to to another document...
Click Copy.
Windows users:
Use the keyboard to bring the Windows Start menu to the front:
Press Windows key+TAB together (to access the Start menu) or Alt+TAB together (to cycle through all currently running programs) and access your text program. Open your document. Select "Paste".

Macintosh users:
Use the keyboard to bring the Finder (dock) icons to the front:
Press Command (Apple) key+TAB together (to access the Finder (dock) icons. Hold Command down and repeat TAB to cycle through all currently running programs. Release to select the required program. Open your document. Select "Paste".

If the text is still not appearing in the correct fonts, this is a function of that text program and not under our control. Highlight the text and select one of the Joiner fonts from the font menu. Remember that the font used for input of text does not join.

c) Manually reformat all input fields:
If the f in the input text "fox" is not OK it may mean the font size changed many times and destroyed the formatting in each of the default sizes. (If the entered text is not SassoonCUPPrimaryGB font, the result will never look joined). This is a more serious problem. EVERY default type size must be reformatted using the correct font.

Start by switching to Word enter some text that can be recognized easily as a Sassoon Joiner font such as: fox
Highlight this text and format ONLY with the level one font entitled
"SassoonOneGB" (for Sassoon Joiner program) or
"SassoonCUPPrimaryGB" (for Sassoon Cambridge Joiner program).
Change the size to 12pt.
Highlight and "Copy" this text.
Switch to Sassoon Joiner, go the Level 2 "Linked letters".
Select Size > 12pt.
Select the "Paste" button.

Switch to Word.
Highlight fox and change to 18pt.
Highlight and "Copy" this text.
Switch to Sassoon Joiner, go the Level 2 "Linked letters".
Select Size > 18pt.
Select the "Paste" button.

Switch to Word.
Highlight fox and change to 24pt.
Highlight and "Copy" this text.
Switch to Sassoon Joiner, go the Level 2 "Linked letters".
Select Size > 24pt.
Select the "Paste" button.

Switch to Word.
Highlight fox and change to 36pt.
Highlight and "Copy" this text.
Switch to Sassoon Joiner, go the Level 2 "Linked letters".
Select Size > 36pt.
Select the "Paste" button.

Switch to Word.
Highlight fox and change to 72pt.
Highlight and "Copy" this text.
Switch to Sassoon Joiner, go the Level 2 "Linked letters".
Select Size > 72pt.
Select the "Paste" button.

Now that all default text input fields have been corrected in Level 2, clicking "Join" for any size of text should produce joined result. Remember, the Sassoon font must be present in the input text window before text can appear joined.

When Exiting the program select "Keep" to retain your correctly formatted fonts! Otherwise your changes will not be kept.

If you have no success getting joined text to appear, and as a temporary solution until we can assist you further, please be assured that the Joiner program will always produce the correct characters for joining (even if they appear 'scrambled' in Arial or Times font). All that is required is to "Copy" the resulting joined 'scrambled' text, switch programs and "Paste" to your text program. Now reformat the text using the Font menu to a Joiner font Two, Three or Four to make the characters appear joined again.

Please let us know your results and we will try to overcome any problems.
